This question is one to ponder, as I am a firm believer that our extracurricular activities add to our life and work performance in very tangible ways. Reaching into the recesses of our creative psyche and challenging ourselves beyond our comfort zone boosts our confidence, creativity and zest for life.

Over a decade ago I decided to take zumba classes and one-on-one Latin dancing lessons to improve my dancing ability. Zumba taught me choreography and helped me follow the music’s rhythm. Initially despite having Latin blood I was quite frustrated with my progress in following my talented Venezuelan Zumba Instructor Ivonne. With persistence, practice and determination, after a couple of months I was able to keep up comfortably. Now after years of Latin dancing, one of my passions, I can hold my own and even keep up with the expert dancers.

So why is this relevant enough to post on LinkedIn? Well it is the determination it takes to open up to something new, challenge ourselves to face the unknown and stick to it until we succeed that builds career resiliency. In fact, if I were building a team, I would want creatively inclined staff that think outside of the box and continue to reinvent themselves.

Recently I decided it was time to challenge myself again creatively. I signed up for one-on-one singing classes. I used to sing many years ago but like many people life’s transitions came along and I stopped singing. So, I decided to find a singing coach to help me find my voice and learn proper technique. Upon meeting my singing coach Art Nefsky (http://www.showoffstudio.ca) I knew I was in the right place and that singing lessons would change my life. In a few short weeks not only did my confidence grow but I also found my voice. Actually, my confidence grew to the point where I was able to recently serenade my best friend and his wife on their wedding day.

I can honestly attest that these creative activities add to the energy and enthusiasm I bring to work. I find I feel more confident to speak up with new ideas; I manage stress more effectively and have found more joy at work as well. So, I encourage you to do what makes your soul sing and the benefits will be seen in all aspects of life including on the job!
