The Fear of Being Forgotten: Why You Don’t Have to Be “On” All the Time

Have you ever felt like if you’re not posting regularly on social media, you’ll be forgotten? That if you're not visible online, your value will fade? This fear of being left behind in the fast-paced world of digital visibility is more common than we think — but it’s not a truth we have to live by.
We are not content machines. We are human — with emotions, life transitions, responsibilities, and an innate need for reflection, connection, and rest. And sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is to pause.
You’re Not Alone in Feeling Overwhelmed
In my coaching work and personal life, I’ve seen how deeply this year has impacted people. Many of my clients and peers have shared how stretched thin they feel — mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
I, too, have been navigating a tender season. I've had to confront deep fears around elder care — finding ways to support my parents while maintaining my own mental and emotional well-being. It's been one of the most soul-testing times of my life. And it wasn’t a time to “show up” on social media. It was a time to turn inward.
Honoring the Inner Call to Be Still
Feeling depleted, I followed an inner pull to take a spiritual retreat. Led by a wise professor here, it focused on Spiritual Exercises and a study of the Gospels in preparation for Easter. I hesitated at first — I hadn’t revisited scripture in depth since stepping away from religious institutions over 20 years ago. But something deeper called me, and I said yes.
It was also a silent retreat — three days of contemplative stillness, prayer, meditation, and study.
And in that silence, I heard the message I most needed to receive: Listen when God calls.
This retreat wasn’t about answers — it was about surrendering to the quiet. In a world where we're told to constantly “produce,” I was reminded that real wisdom comes not from volume, but from stillness. The kind of stillness that heals and restores.
What I Learned in the Quiet
Stillness is not laziness. It is a sacred act of receiving.
Non-verbal connection is powerful. A smile, a shared coffee, or presence beside someone we cherish says more than any online post ever could.
Nature heals. Communion with creation brings clarity no screen ever can.
Authentic messages take time. I needed space to return with something real, something that mattered.
I know how loud the pressure can be to stay visible. But visibility is not the same as value. We don’t need to be “on” to be relevant. We just need to be true.
🌱 Tips to Combat the Fear of Falling Behind on Social Media
1. Honor your seasons. Like nature, your growth requires cycles of rest.
2. Create from alignment, not anxiety. Don’t post for the algorithm — create for your soul.
3. Limit comparison. Others’ timelines are not your truth.
4. Prioritize real connection. Conversations, silence, and shared presence are deeply nourishing.
5. Trust your pace. You don’t have to race to keep up. The right people will wait for your return.
If any of this speaks to you, I invite you to reach out. This is the kind of work I do with my clients — helping them return to center, trust their timing, and redefine success in alignment with their values and soul.
